The short answer

For most people, OmniRush. You get an agent on frontier GPT models without a subscription, a card or an API bill, plus swarm agents and a Linux sandbox per project. Windsurf, now Devin Desktop, is a capable agent editor, but its free plan has “limited model availability”, and the frontier models from OpenAI, Anthropic and Google come with Pro at $20 a month or Max at $200.

What happened to Windsurf

Cognition announced on June 2, 2026 that “Windsurf is now Devin Desktop”, the same IDE under the Devin name, and said plans and pricing stayed the same. Its local agent is now Devin Local, “the successor to Cascade”. Today windsurf.com/pricing redirects to Devin's pricing page, and the app installs as Devin on macOS, Windows and Linux.

Price: free versus a monthly plan

Devin's pricing page lists Free ($0, a “light quota to code with agents”, “limited model availability”, unlimited inline edits and Tab completions), Pro ($20 a month, “increased quotas, including access to frontier models from OpenAI, Claude, Gemini, and SpaceXAI” and “full model availability”) and Max ($200 a month, “significantly higher quotas”). Quotas refresh daily and weekly, and paid plans can buy extra usage at API pricing.

OmniRush charges nothing. Every account gets an allowance of frontier-model work that refills every day, with no card and no paid tier. Over a year, that is $0 against $240 on Pro or $2,400 on Max.

OmniRush charges nothing.

What a year of agent work costs

  • Devin Desktop Pro, $20 a month$240 a year
  • Devin Desktop Max, $200 a month$2,400 a year

Devin Desktop (formerly Windsurf) prices from devin.ai/pricing as of October 25, 2026, at the monthly price (no yearly price is listed). Extra usage on paid plans is billed at API pricing.

Models

OmniRush serves OpenAI's frontier models: GPT 6 Astra (the default), GPT 6.1 Sol and GPT 6 Sol. Every chat starts on GPT 6 Astra, and you can switch the model and the reasoning effort per chat or per run. Claude Opus 5.5, Claude Sonnet 5.5 and Kimi K3.1 Pro are available in OmniRush too, and they work in the same per-project sandbox as every other model. There are no keys to set up. Usage limits apply, and a request may be served by an equivalent or newer model while OmniRush tests models or manages capacity, as the Terms say.

On Devin Desktop, the free plan has limited model availability; Pro and Max add frontier models from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and SpaceXAI, and Cognition's own SWE models.

What you get with OmniRush

  • Frontier GPT models for free: GPT 6 Astra, GPT 6.1 Sol and GPT 6 Sol, with a daily allowance that refills every day. No card, no paid tier, no API bill.
  • A desktop app for Windows, macOS and Linux with swarm agents: ask for a swarm and several agents split one task side by side, then hand you one summary. It also has a code editor and an IDE layout beside the chat.
  • A terminal CLI built on the opencode engine: an interactive agent, one-shot runs with -p, pipes, scripts, CI and SSH.
  • A Linux sandbox per project, so the agent's installs and commands run apart from the rest of your machine, and installed packages are still there next time.
  • Guarded by default: the agent asks before risky actions such as git writes, destructive commands and sudo. Careful mode asks before every change and command; Auto never asks.
  • Built-in best-practice guides for setup, features, bugs, tests, refactors and reviews, and an agent that checks its own changes with your project's checks, sees code diagnostics after edits and keeps notes in AGENTS.md.
  • Review, fix and undo built in: /review checks your changes, /fix fixes what it found, and one /undo takes back a whole turn while keeping your own edits.
  • Hosted web search for the model, when it is available for your account, with the searches and their sources shown in the chat.
  • MCP servers from a supported list: filesystem, git, SQLite, memory, sequential thinking, time, Playwright on local pages, and Figma with your own key.

Data

OmniRush is funded by brand ads, and data use described in our privacy policy. Read it, with the Terms, before you sign up: together they are the data agreement you accept.

Which one should you use?

  • Choose OmniRush if you want frontier models without paying for them, a desktop app with swarm agents, a Linux sandbox per project, or one free account for both a window and your terminal.
  • Keep Devin Desktop if unlimited Tab completions in its editor, or Devin Cloud agents, are what you use most, and run the longer local tasks in OmniRush on the same folder.
  • Not sure? OmniRush costs nothing to try: give both the same real task and compare.

Questions

Is Windsurf still available?

Under a new name. Cognition renamed Windsurf to Devin Desktop on June 2, 2026; existing plans and pricing carried over, and windsurf.com/pricing now opens Devin's plans.

Is Windsurf free?

Devin Desktop, formerly Windsurf, has a free plan with a light agent quota, limited model availability, and unlimited inline edits and Tab completions. Full model access starts with Pro at $20 a month.

Is OmniRush a free Windsurf alternative?

Yes. OmniRush has no paid tier: GPT 6 Astra, GPT 6.1 Sol and GPT 6 Sol come with a daily allowance that refills every day, in a desktop app for Windows, macOS and Linux and a terminal CLI.

Can I move my Windsurf project to OmniRush?

There is nothing to move. Open the same project folder in the OmniRush desktop app or run omnirush in it from your terminal; a project's AGENTS.md is read as it is.
